Stomach cancer symptoms like many other types of internal cancers, are at the onset difficult to detect and diagnose as they tend to mirror other health issues and be misdiagnosed by the patient.

The most frequent stomach cancer symptoms include feeling bloated or overly full after eating even a small meal. This can be misunderstood as a stomach flu or bug. Mild to severe heartburn can be misdiagnosed as indigestion or GERD (Gastro Esophageal Reflux Disorder). In advanced stages stomach cancer symptoms can present as severe nausea, crippling stomach and abdominal pain. The patient may even experience excessive flatulence,

Given the location of the stomach, cancer in this area tends to be very aggressive and spreads quickly and easily through the major organs. Patients experiencing symptoms also manifest issues with eating and begin to lose weight quickly and become dehydrated as the consumption of food or fluids through the digestive tract becomes highly painful, and the patient begins to refuse to eat or drink as a result. The presence of the lymph nodes in the abdominal cavity make stomach cancer symptoms likely to spread to other major organs and become systemic instead of localized, and enter the blood stream leading to patient mortality.

The acidic nature of the stomach lends itself to the spread and development of cancer as digestive acids have the ability to cause precancerous cells to mutate at a rapid rate, causing the cancer to spread. Metastasis is almost impossible to prevent once the cancer cells have spread outside the stomach and since complete removal of the stomach is not possible (as removal of other cancerous areas have the highest recovery rates when surgically removed) stomach cancer has one of the highest fatality rates among all the cancers.

In advanced stages of this cancer 95% of diagnoses are for the condition of "adenocarcinomas" which are cancerous lesions and tumors present on the inside of the stomach lining and in the glandular tissues of the stomach. This condition eventually evolves to a lining of the stomach and hardening which prevents the flexibility required for the stomach to properly digest food inside the peritoneum which is the cavity of the stomach.

One of the invisible symptoms is internal bleeding which due to the digestive process, cannot be consistently detected visually in the stool. If stomach cancer symptoms are present a FOT (Fecal Occult Test) will be conducted to determine not just the presence of blood in the feces but also the quantity of blood which will assist in determining the severity and progression of the stomach cancer.

With all the health education available about stomach cancer symptoms and the importance of early detection and treatment to the survivorship rate of diagnosed populations it remains confusing as to why individuals continue to allow cancer to progress to stage two or later before prompting investigations. Is it fear? Are we simply just more willing to consider it a stomach pain than the possibility of it being something far more life threatening? And if so perhaps the educational efforts should be geared toward patient self-management where any change in normal functioning is addressed and investigated immediately. If only the cost and availability of health care allowed for that.

It is a great mistake of modern life to wait for pharmaceutical companies to find and patent a cure for cancer. We already have available to us, if we seek it out, the knowledge of how to live in a way that will prevent the disease. Isn't that preferable?

Dr. Otto Warburg explained the basic biological process by which we "get" cancer in 1931, for which he received a Nobel Prize. It is a shame that -- for a variety of reasons -- his insights have not been translated to the general public so we might protect ourselves by correcting our diet and lifestyle, rather than waiting for some pharmaceutical giant to find a way to make huge profits by patenting a drug or therapy that "cures" cancer.

Boiled frogs come into the picture as the perfect analogy of how we humans get so involved and distracted by our jobs and the petty pleasures we are permitted that we forget the true purpose of life -- learning how to successfully live it.

Instead, we let the experts do our thinking for us, while we go about the chores of living in such a way that now, slightly more than half of our deaths in the USA are caused by cancer.

You see, the so-called experts are more concerned with finding and patenting a cure for cancer (which would be immensely profitable!) than they are at educating us on how, by changing our diet and lifestyle, we can generally avoid ever having the disease!

We have donated billions of dollars over the decades since the "War On Cancer" was declared, but the average person, like the proverbial frog in a pot of simmering water, has not heard the recipe for cancer prevention.

He is too busy watching the Super Bowl with friends and eating foods that couldn't be better for causing cancer. The only exercise many of the most likely cancer victims get will be jumping up and down cheering on their team from the couch.

While most Americans ignore the cautiously worded warnings to eat more fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and legumes, our withered willpower is busily being subverted by advertising. Eating healthy foods -- "rabbit food" -- is no fun, we are told by innuendo at every commercial break.

This is the Boiled Frog Conspiracy. We have paid billions for scientists to find us the answer why we get cancer, but the secret is drowned out in commercial messages that urge us to keep doing the things that are causing the disease. Meanwhile, our health watchdog agencies like the USDA and FDA are too busy protecting the profits of the cancer drug cartel and the food industry to tell us the simple truth of how to prevent the disease.

Is It a Conspiracy? You Decide!

Face it, fellow frogs, there is too much money being made by feeding us a diet that favors the growth of cancer -- while collecting money to fund research for the cure -- to ever be told that the way to prevent cancer has already been found.

Liver Cancer: Nexavar or Herbs - Your Choice

Mutu (not real name,H520) is a 48-year-old male. In November 2010 he had coughs with some phlegm. In late December 2010 he was admitted into a private hospital with complaints of right hypochondrial pain (i.e., pain under the rib-cage margin). He was nauseated but no vomiting. He also had post prandial dyspepsia (i.e., a medical term meaning feeling of unusual fullness, nausea, loss of appetite or belching following a meal).

CT scan of the abdomen showed multiple masses measuring 7.3 x 5.1 cm, 6.3 x 6.1 cm and 7.3 x 4.5 cm, in the right lobe of his liver, suggestive of diffuse hepatocellular carcinoma or liver metastases. A biopsy was performed on 23 December 2010 and confirmed moderately differentiated infiltrating liver cancer. A blood test results, done on 19 January 2011, showed elevated liver function values. His alpha-fetoprotein (liver cancer marker) stood at 1,024,332.0.

Mutu was prescribed Nexavar - an oral chemo-drug that cost about RM20,000 per month. He was told that Nexavar would not cure his cancer. It would only control it (whatever that means, see discussion later).

After taking Nexavar for a week, he suffered the following side effects:

1. Bloatedness
2. Shoulder muscle pain
3. Sleeping difficulty
4. Nausea and sometimes vomiting
5. Dizzy when walking
6. Loss of appetite due to bloatedness
7. Cramps of fingers and toes
8. Constipation

Comments

Let me highlight some of the important points of this case in a question-and-answer format.

1. Assuming for a moment that you are a medical expert. I believe you have seen hundreds or thousands of CT scans and blood test results. From your experience, what can you make out of this case by just looking at the scans and blood test results? The images are bad and the AFP (alpha-fetoprotein) exceeded a million points. Honestly, is a biopsy really necessary? So, after a biopsy, what can you offer to "cure" the patient?

2. It appears that all that modern medicine can offer is Nexavar. Would you as an expert offer this drug to the patient knowing that it cost about RM 20,000 per month and it does not cure? I guess you would if the patient is rich enough to pay for it or if his insurance covers the cost. This is a win-win situation you may say. After all this is what buying a health insurance is for! But hang on. In this case what if Mutu's total medical cover is limited, assuming it is RM 100,000? That means the insurance pays for only five months' supply of Nexavar. What happens after that? And within 8 to 11 months patients just die anyway(see point 4 below)?

3. As an expert, would you admit to your patient that Nexavar cannot cure his cancer? Yes, you did in this case. That is honorable of you. Obviously not many patients are going to pay that kind of money if there is no cure. You justified by saying that Nexavar can control it. That sounds good, convincing and heroic isn't it? Especially if the patient is desperate and helpless. Such patients need that "last straw". But what do you really mean by control?

4. Have you gone into the website of the drug company that sells Nexavar? If you do, you may find this very impressive table with equally impressive so-called "scientific" data.

- In a study of 602 people... Nexavar helped slow cancer growth and helped extend the lives of patients compared with patients who did not receive Nexavar.
- Nexavar extended overall survival by 44%.

For the benefit of those who are not used to reading and interpreting research data, let me explain a bit more. From the research data, we know that there were 299 patients taking Nexavar (n= 299) and the median overall survival is 10.7 months. Compare this to 303 patients who did not take Nexavar (group called Placebo, n = 303) which had a median overall survival of 7.9 months.

The glaring facts of this study showed that:

- By taking Nexavar patients lived longer by 2.8 months. Take note that they were not cured at all. Eventually patients died. The median survival ranged from about 8 to 11 months, irrespective of whether they take Nexavar or not.

So based on the above experimental data, ask this question. Would you spend RM 20,000 per month and for every month, to live 3 months longer? Again, take note that the price of Nexavar varies - depending on where you buy it and whether you pay cash or pay through insurance claim. Obviously the price is higher when your insurance pays for it.

Of course, if this point is crudely presented like I did above, extending life by 2.8 months is not impressive at all! The educated people devised a better way of saying things in a nicer, attractive but deceptive way. Another way of saying is: Nexavar extended overall survival by 44%. Increasing survival by 44% is very impressive indeed.

Mark Twain (of the USA) made famous this phrase: "There are three kinds of lies: lies, damned lies and statistics." This phrase is now used to describe " the use of statistics to bolster weak arguments, and the tendency of people to disparage statistics that do not support their positions". In simple language, the statisticians (the experts of numbers) "massage" the data to make what seems ugly to look pretty. Take note also this "manipulation or massage" of data is not wrong - it is academically legitimate!

So take it from me that "Extending life by 2.8 months" or "Extending overall survival by 44%" are both right and academically acceptable. Unfortunately I still cannot figure out how they come up with the 44 percentage figure. I need a bit more time to learn this "art of stretching the truth with numbers."

With a simple mind like common folks, I would have just do this: I would take 10.7 minus 7.9 = 2.8. Then I would divide 2.8 by 7.9 and multiple by 100 to convert it into a percentage. If I did this, I ended up with only 35%. To avoid having to explain "the confusing concept of statistics" let us give the benefit of the doubt to the experts and the drug manufacturer and accept what they say: Nexavar extended overall survival by 44%.

But folks let's concentrate on what matters most. You can choose between these two "options" below. But know that both mean the same thing!

- As a patient if you are told that Nexavar can extend survival by 44%, what would be your reaction?
- On the other hand, if you are told that Nexavar can extend your life by only 2.8 months, what would be your reaction?

Having got over this, what if you are clearly told that the extension of survival by 2.8 months is no free lunch. Apart from having to pay RM 20,000 per month, there are a variety of side effects you may have to endure. In this case, Mutu suffered eight side effects after consuming Nexavar for a week.

But don't fault the drug company. You have been forewarned. Patients taking Nexavar may suffer the following side effects (according to the company's website):

1. Decreased blood flow to the heart and heart attack.
2. Bleeding problems. Nexavar may increase your chance of bleeding.
3. High blood pressure.
4. A skin problem called hand-foot skin reaction. This causes redness, pain, swelling, or blisters on the palms of your hands or soles of your feet.
5. Perforation of the bowel.
6. Possible wound healing problems. You may need to have a surgical or dental procedure.
7. Birth defects or death of an unborn baby.
8. Rash, redness, itching, or peeling of your skin
9. Hair thinning or patchy hair loss
10. Diarrhea
11. Nausea or vomiting
12. Mouth sores
13. Weakness
14. Loss of appetite
15. Numbness, tingling, or pain in your hands and feet
16. Abdominal pain
17. Fatigue
18. Weight loss

5. Solutions?

The lady was indeed sharp. She asked me: "Then, that are the solutions?" I must admit I cannot guarantee any cure. We know that in cancer there is no such thing as a cure (meaning, real cure, not just surviving 5 years). In the case of advanced liver cancer, we all know that survival is only in terms of months. So, we are faced with a difficult case. This is the first time that a patient came in with his alpha-fetoprotein reading well over a million. The highest we have ever seen in 14 years is about half that value.

We have two suggestions for Mutu.

a) Take care of your diet. He was given a list of food that he can and cannot eat. Unfortunately this list is way off the mark compared to our recommendation.

b) Take herbs and hope for the best. If a patient has no pain, can eat and sleep - these are about all we can hope for. How long to live is not ours to decide.

It is up to Mutu to decide if he wants to continue taking the Nexavar and reap whatever benefits (and also side effects) that are associated with it. But ask this: Is it worth it?

Some of you may say: Aah, you snake oil peddler - you and your herbs and dietary fad - these are just quackery. They are not proven and not scientific. Hang on, before you cast the first stone, take time to read some of our success stories. Tell us where we go wrong if you think that we are wrong!

Can a Cancer Prevention Diet Lower Your Risks of Getting Cancer?

It is often said that what we eat is what we are. Does this mean that an unhealthy diet can lead to cancer? Is it also true that a cancer prevention diet can lower your risks of getting the disease? These are important questions to ask since research shows that there might be a direct link between the consumption of certain foods and disease.

It is worth looking at how harmful an unhealthy diet can be and what cancer risk it poses. Researchers have found that the diet rich in animal fats increases the chance of prostate cancer in men significantly. Similarly, above normal weight and obesity put women at higher risk of endometrial (uterus) cancer during menopause. There is strong evidence to suggest that an unhealthy diet full of fats and lower in fiber can increase the risk of colorectal cancer and other types of gastrointestinal cancer.

Given all this, it can be safely said that an unhealthy diet may increase your risk of getting cancer. The main question is whether the opposite is true. Can a healthy diet aid prevention? The truth is that there is no direct link found between food and cancer. This means that there are no known foods or food substances that can cause the development of a malignant tumor. Given the example above, not all men having a diet rich in animal fat will develop prostate cancer.

All this comes to show that even if you avoid the unhealthy foods, such as red meat and butter, this will not guarantee that you will not get cancer. This may reduce your chances of getting the condition to an extent. Similarly, some foods and some of the chemical compounds they contain, in particular, are claimed to prevent cancer.

However, there is usually no full proof evidence that this is possible. For instance, there is no evidence that resveratrol, contained in grapes, can slow the tumor growth in humans like it slows the tumor growth in mice. In addition, the consumption of some fiber-rich foods, for instance, does not guarantee that you will never get cancer.

Another interesting thing to note is that some foods are considered anti-cancer because their consumption has had a positive effect in studies, but they do not know what causes this positive effect. This is the case with tomatoes, for instance. Their consumption may lower your risk of getting cancer, but it is not clear which of their ingredients work and how.

After all the arguments are presented, it is now time to ask - what is the verdict? The best answer here is that healthy diet can help reduce the cancer risk to an extent. It should be used for prevention. However, it is not a foolproof method for cancer prevention. Even if you adopt a healthy diet, this does not mean that you reduce your cancer risk to zero. For this reason, other adequate measures for prevention, such as regular screening tests, should be taken as well.

In general, a healthy diet may reduce your risk of cancer significantly or very little. The important thing to keep in mind is that healthy nutrition can bring you a lot of other health benefits. These include general health and heart and gastrointestinal health, in particular. It is worth asking what kind of diet can help in the prevention of cancer to an extent.

The foods that may increase your risk are red meats and sugar. The fat-rich dairy products are also not particularly healthy. Hence, it is worth reducing their consumption. Additionally, it should be pointed out that the way you cook the meat can also reduce the risk of cancer. When you fry, grill or broil meat, some chemical compounds in it are transformed and can become dangerous. For this reason, stewing and steaming are recommended.

The beneficial foods to include in your diet are vegetables and fruits. The green leafy vegetables, the ones from the cabbage family, such as cauliflower, tomatoes and asparagus are beneficial and may help prevent cancer. The consumption of beans is highly recommended as well. Strawberries, raspberries and blueberries may also reduce your cancer risk significantly and improve your general health. This is applicable to the fiber-rich fruits, such as apples and cherries.

Overall, the healthy diet can only bring you benefits and may help prevent cancer to a great extent.

Every year Zoeller Ministries & PBOC host 70+ families with terminally-ill children to an all-expense paid weekend at Sebring Raceway. In the last couple of years, the Kids Racing For Life (KRFL) program has suffered tremendous cut-backs due to the down economy. The event in 2010 was nearly cancelled due to a lack of donations. With the permission of Zoeller Ministries, TrackWeekend.com & Massive Motorsports have teamed up to help keep this wonderful program running. The first step was to help raise awareness, and what better way to do this than by creating a video showcasing what the event is about. We asked some of our friends, pro-drivers and club owners to help us tell this story. The outcome was a genuinely heartfelt and impactful video.
